How SPC-2 distinguishes awareness, a localized subject and a lived scene, and turns a philosophical proposal into explicit laws of manifestation.

The account in one direct answer

SPC-2 proposes that consciousness as a lived episode is the localized manifestation of awareness through a qualifying physical organization. Awareness is the knowing aspect of reality; the vessel determines where a perspective is assigned and how its scene is organized. The central claim is not that clever behavior gradually turns into awareness. It is that an explicit physical and constitutive specification determines the local form of manifestation.

This answers a question in one candidate theory. It does not give a neutral definition accepted by every consciousness programme. The distinction matters because words such as awareness, access and selfhood are used differently across disciplines. This guide explains the September 2026 publication's own commitments, so a reader can see both what it proposes and which premises carry the proposal.

The starting question is presence rather than performance: why is there something presented, rather than only a process with describable capacities?

Awareness, subject, scene and person

Awareness is not another object located in the scene. A subject is the localized perspective assigned to a qualifying core. A scene is what is currently presented to that perspective. The person includes bodily continuity, memories, skills and practical relationships. These are distinctions of explanatory role, not four small entities stacked inside a head.

Think of hearing music while remembering a friend. The sound and remembered image can be parts of the current scene. The processes retrieving the memory need not all appear as noticed objects. The biography that makes the friend familiar belongs to the personal organization. The episode's presence, its particular contents and your later ability to describe them remain different questions.

A scene need not be visual, linguistic or reflective. There can be a proposed perspective without the sentence “I am conscious” being available to it. Equally, the availability of that sentence does not settle whether its producer has a perspective. These distinctions let the account ask comparative questions without silently treating human self-description as its definition.

Why start with awareness?

The philosophical strategy treats experiential presence as primitive. Rather than derive an experiential reality from premises declared wholly nonexperiential, it asks how awareness is manifested in bounded and differentiated ways. The manuscript calls this the source-to-manifestation problem. It acknowledges that fundamental experience and double-aspect approaches already belong to the philosophical discussion of the hard problem.

A primitive is useful only with laws that constrain its application. “Awareness is fundamental” alone cannot decide whether two interacting systems have one perspective or two. It cannot explain which differences matter to a lived scene, or what happens when a process is copied. SPC-2 therefore separates its source-awareness premise from admission, content and continuity laws.

U names reality before the operational source/readout distinction. It is not a global observer, a timeless biography or a supplied mathematical universe of awareness states. A working source S and its readout T are restricted descriptions relevant to a specified problem. Their common ontological ground does not automatically produce a mathematically sufficient bridge between them.

The motivation for awareness as primitive and the explanatory obligations explain why the formal laws remain necessary.

From a physical process to a declared assignment

The laws begin with R*, a certified realization containing actual components, native timing and operations, records, resources, boundaries and lineage. It also includes a declared selection doctrine. Calling a system a brain or computer does not supply that specification. Selecting components to obtain a preferred verdict would reverse the required order.

A1 assigns a perspective to a qualifying maximal internal recurrent core. Its covering return must be physically executable in one compatible native schedule, with a returned distinction and nontrivial native prediction. A graph loop or a list of separately possible interactions is insufficient. A1 then makes the experiential identification openly: the mathematics of recurrence by itself does not prove unity of experience.

A2 specifies phenomenal organization using the complete endogenous predictive structure. It retains all admitted finite continuations, their native records and operations, and checked transition laws between predictive classes. A3 specifies continuation of qualifying episodes through nonbranching process provenance. Together with A0's interpretation, these laws answer different parts of the manifestation question.

What makes one experience different from another?

Under A2, a difference matters through its place in the core's complete native organization: which internally admitted operations distinguish it, what outcomes can follow, and how these possibilities continue. The assigned phenomenal point corresponds to the predictive class of the actual state. This is a relational account of qualitative organization, not a scalar amount of consciousness.

Consider the book's two-bit model. Its four configurations have different native future laws, so the model assigns four pointed phenomenal states. Their relations can be calculated exactly. No calculation labels a configuration as redness or pain. Connecting such structure to human qualities requires independently elicited phenomenal landmarks and a justified realization.

A2 also makes a substantial philosophical choice. Once primitive presence and the complete structure are fixed, it postulates no further manifested qualitative remainder. A reader who thinks two fully structure-equivalent processes can still differ in such a remainder rejects this axiom. Constructing a structural copy proves consistency of the assignment, not the truth of structural completeness.

What this account does and does not settle

SPC-2 does not say every object has a scene. Its local admission rule must be satisfied. It also does not impose an unspoken complexity threshold: a genuinely certified minimal physical self-return process can qualify. That permissiveness is a consequence to assess, not something to conceal behind appealing brain imagery.

Nor does a continuous biography establish one uninterrupted experiential episode. During a genuinely scene-less qualification gap, the person and organism can persist while the localized episode ends. A later memory of nothing cannot establish that such a gap occurred. Experience, access, recall and identity need separate evidence.

The completion theorem establishes determinate assignments on the certified finite domain. The further questions are whether the selected realization describes the intended system, whether A1 and A2 fit independent constraints, and whether the source-awareness premise is philosophically justified. “Candidate internal resolution” names this completed conditional construction, while keeping those questions visible.
