SPC-2 and Other Theories of Consciousness
A source-grounded comparison of SPC-2 with the philosophical and scientific programmes discussed in the publication, organized around their different explanatory commitments.

SPC-2 combines a source-awareness premise with explicit laws for subject admission, phenomenal structure and temporal identity. Its distinctive proposal is this conjunction, not the invention of recurrence, predictive representation or fundamental experience in isolation. A useful comparison asks what each programme identifies with experience, how it selects a subject and what would count as evidence.
This guide follows the comparisons in the September 2026 monograph. It is not a comprehensive current review or a ranking of theories. The source distinguishes a mathematically determinate constitution from an empirically tested application: those are different achievements, and neither should be treated as a substitute for the other.
SPC-2's exact finite construction makes its dependencies visible. It also creates obligations to justify the realization and the constitutive laws. Explicitness is an advantage for inspection; it is not itself evidence that the resulting assignment is correct in nature.

Fundamental experience and the hard problem
The monograph treats Chalmers's hard-problem discussion as an antecedent that already allowed fundamental experience, structural coherence, organizational invariance and a double-aspect approach. It therefore does not claim to dissolve the problem by revealing that every earlier formulation assumed reductive materialism.
SPC-2 changes the proposed explanatory direction to manifestation. Awareness is primitive under A0; physically realized organization conditions local perspectives under A1–A3. That still leaves a hard burden: the laws must justify their particular assignments. A common source does not establish whether a given process has one perspective, many or none.
The sharp disagreement identified by the edition concerns structural completeness. Its reading of Chalmers leaves intrinsic qualitative character beyond structural description. A2 instead postulates no further manifested qualitative remainder once primitive presence and the complete nominated organization are fixed. This is a disagreement about a psychophysical premise. A proof about predictive quotients cannot decide it.

Integrated information theory
The edition describes IIT 4.0 as identifying experience with an irreducible cause–effect structure unfolded from a maximal substrate. It explicitly rejects the caricature that IIT is merely a scalar consciousness score. A fair comparison must address that structure and substrate selection rather than reduce the theory to one number.
SPC-2 selects qualifying maximal internal strongly connected cores using its realized joint-dependence organization, executable covering returns and native predictive distinctions. IIT's integrated cause–effect selection differs from that rule. A2's complete endogenous predictive instrument object also differs from the cause–effect structure identified in IIT.
The two programmes share concern with intrinsic organization, definite subjects and structured experience. Shared questions do not establish equivalent answers. The book supplies no general translation between their assignments and does not derive IIT's postulates from A0–A3.
An illuminating future comparison would need matched physical implementations, explicit modeling choices and identified cases in which assignments agree or diverge. Renaming one theory's object with the other's vocabulary would obscure the assumptions that actually need comparison.

Global workspace and access
The monograph describes global neuronal workspace theory through access, global broadcasting and amplification. These concern how information becomes broadly available within a cognitive architecture. SPC-2 also treats access as physically important, while distinguishing access from primitive awareness and from the definition of every possible localized perspective.
This difference matters at the lower boundary. SPC-2 does not require adult human report, metacognition or a rich broadcasting architecture for every admitted case. Its formal A1 rule can admit certified minimal self-return processes. Its biological scene-forming interpretation cannot be used to silently add a stronger admission condition after that result.
The edition discusses the COGITATE adversarial collaboration as testing preregistered predictions of proposed biological implementations of workspace theory and IIT. It reports support for some predictions and challenges to important predictions of both. Those results concern specified neural accounts; they do not validate SPC-2 or settle source-awareness ontology.
The methodological lesson adopted is concrete: state competing commitments and the consequence of a failed prediction before examining outcomes. A theory needs a stable target for criticism as well as an explanation of successes.

Predictive representation and AI indicators
The predictive mathematics has established antecedents, acknowledged in Chapter 16. SPC-2 uses an intrinsic-state quotient based on all admitted finite native tests and adds an explicit transition-congruence requirement. Its further move is psychophysical: A2 identifies the complete resulting structure with phenomenal organization.
Predictive sufficiency alone does not make that identification. A representation may capture all nominated future record laws without thereby proving presence or phenomenal adequacy. Nor is the actual intrinsic state an analyst's posterior belief. Those are essential distinctions when comparing the constitution with other uses of prediction.
For AI, the edition contrasts approaches that gather architectural indicators from several consciousness theories with SPC-2's single explicit admission, structure and continuity law. It also acknowledges biological-naturalist challenges to assuming an abstract computation preserves all consciousness-relevant properties. The book adopts no universal verdict about every artificial implementation from either comparison.
SPC-2's conditional substrate openness requires preservation of its full nominated realization, not merely matching output. Whether that realization omits an important biological property remains a question for the adequacy of the theory.

How to compare without inventing a winner
Three questions make comparisons more useful. First, what physical realization is being described, including its components, timing and admitted operations? Second, which constitutive identification connects that organization to experience? Third, what independent observation or philosophical consideration bears on the identification?
For SPC-2, a weak internal coupling can discontinuously change the exact subject count, and a genuinely certified simple register can qualify. Those consequences should remain visible in comparison. Adding a preferred complexity threshold or ignoring small internal edges may be a defensible new proposal, but it changes the current rule.
The programme also preserves all physical transcript probabilities when only its aspect interpretation is added. An otherwise identical physical reduct cannot be distinguished by those transcripts alone. Claims about realization adequacy and phenomenal correspondence can still be tested, but they should not be advertised as direct physical discrimination of transcript-identical ontologies.
A fair assessment therefore compares particular commitments and evidence, not labels such as mathematical, scientific or fundamental. SPC-2 contributes a clear conditional construction. Its status as a candidate remains tied to the justification of those commitments.
Weak-coupling sensitivity and conservativity are central comparison points.
