Dreams, Anesthesia, and Continuity of Experience

A scene, its later recall and the continuing person answer different questions. SPC-2 uses qualification and provenance to distinguish experiential episodes.

A person can continue when an episode does not

SPC-2 distinguishes the continuing organism and person from a currently instantiated experiential subject. Dreams can be lived scenes even when external interaction is reduced. A genuinely scene-less interval contains no current experience and no localized experiential subject. Under A3, a genuine qualification gap ends an episode; renewed qualification begins another.

Memory and responsiveness do not decide which case occurred. An unremembered dream and an interval without any scene can produce the same later sentence: “I remember nothing.” A person can also fail to respond through a particular channel while some experience continues. The explanatory task is to separate these possibilities rather than define one by another.

This guide explains the publication's interpretation and temporal law. It does not provide a clinical test or a judgment about any particular anesthetic episode.

Dreams change the constraint on a scene

The book interprets dreaming as an organized scene when external constraint is reduced and generative and scene-forming processes remain sufficiently coupled. A landscape can be experienced without matching the bedroom. That mismatch concerns the scene's accuracy relative to the environment, not whether the occurrence is real as an experience.

Reduced constraint is not complete separation from physical organization or a claim that every dream has one mechanism. The dream remains conditioned by the vessel. Its contents can draw on retained history, current bodily condition and internally organized activity without reproducing any one source verbatim.

The edition's discussion of dream research separates sleep stage, reported experience and recall. It does not identify all sleep with dreaming, or demand successful recollection as the condition for a dream's existence. It also does not preserve an uninterrupted subject by simply stipulating that every apparently empty interval was a forgotten dream.

Experienced blankness still has a scene

The difference between a blank scene and no scene is exact in the manuscript. Silence, darkness, spaciousness or an empty-seeming duration would still be something presented. A genuinely scene-less interval is not a subject waiting in a dark room inside the organism. It contains no current localized experiential subject.

A useful schematic is scene → no scene → scene, where the middle term denotes absence of experience, not an experienced interval with a special content. Physical time can pass while no scene presents that duration. On returning, the sequence may seem immediate. But a similar impression can follow failed memory, so immediacy alone does not prove the middle interval was without experience.

A0 does not fill the gap with a hidden cosmic or personal observer. Awareness as an aspect of U is not said to be created or destroyed, but that ontological commitment is different from the existence of a particular localized episode. Preserving the distinction avoids making source awareness a covert theory of perpetual personal experience.

Several changes can accompany nonresponse

The source distinguishes effects on responsiveness, external connection, memory and scene-forming organization. General anesthesia can disrupt the organization supporting an integrated scene while local neural and biological activity continues. Different drugs, doses and contexts need not produce identical organizations or experiential consequences.

The biological interpretation describes sufficient disruption of coupling between explicit scene-forming and implicit generative organization as preventing a scene. It does not state that one brain “side” is universally switched off. Nor is reduced feedback in one statistic or altered power in one frequency band a complete criterion for all experience.

The edition discusses studies of disconnected experience and retrospective reports in carefully limited settings. It does not transfer those findings into a claim about how often experience occurs under deep surgical anesthesia. Reports may also concern transitions toward arousal. Their interpretation retains the ordinary limitations of memory and reporting.

Local anesthesia supplies a different example: restricting a peripheral incoming channel can leave the larger lived scene intact. Additional sedation and other conditions are separate considerations. A missing sensation is not by itself loss of a subject.

General anesthesia, local anesthesia and candidate correlates preserve these distinctions.

How A3 decides continuation

A3 operates on qualifying occurrences, not simply on a continuously existing organism. A process-provenance edge must connect the core to its successor, and each must have exactly one qualifying continuation partner across that native time step. Maximal chains of these edges are the theory's experiential episodes.

A mode change can therefore alter the scene while one episode continues, provided qualification and nonbranching provenance persist. Conversely, physical regulation and biographical continuity can cross a genuine qualification gap without a continuous experiential episode. The provenance of the vessel is not hidden experience. The resumed qualifying core begins a new episode under the stated law.

This does not mean the person has ceased to exist in the ordinary biological or social sense. The temporal rule concerns numerical identity of experiential episodes, not every kind of personal continuity. Names, relationships, commitments and memories can remain causally and ethically important across the interval.

An analyst ending a recording has done something else entirely. Observation-window truncation censors what was observed; it does not terminate the real episode. The native process and full provenance graph must determine the boundary.

What can be concluded from a report?

A report of a dream supplies information through a channel involving access, encoding, retention and reconstruction. A report of no memory also passes through that channel. Neither should be treated as a transparent sample of the entire interval. The source does not infer hidden experience whenever recall fails, and does not infer absence whenever no report is available.

A serious application would need an independently justified physical model and an explicit account of its experience-facing measurements. It would ask what the measurements can distinguish and what they collapse. Nonresponse is especially insufficient as a universal definition because a particular output route can fail while other internal organization remains.

These difficulties are part of the proposal's evidential responsibility. The scene-forming interpretation must be reconciled with the actual A1 assignment rather than added as a separate switch. The edition's finite theorems do not supply a bedside consciousness detector, and no completed biological validation is claimed.

Incomplete access and the joint evidence model explain how the questions stay connected without becoming interchangeable.
