What the model
actually says.
Direct answers to common questions, with the distinctions and source passages needed to read them precisely.
What is SPC-2?
SPC-2 is the Shadow Psychophysical Constitution in Version 2 of Shadow Theory and Consciousness. A0 supplies the source-awareness interpretation; A1 assigns qualifying local perspectives; A2 assigns phenomenal relational organization; A3 defines nonbranching episode continuation. The laws operate on a certified physical and constitutive realization, R*.
Does this replace the earlier Consciousness Field account?
Yes. The current website presentation is Shadow Theory and Consciousness, Version 2, with SPC-2. The earlier Consciousness Field account is retained as historical provenance rather than a competing current formulation. Earlier programme results are used only with the qualifications stated in this monograph; historical illustrative or signal claims are not empirical validation of SPC-2.
Does the theory say everything is conscious?
No. Source awareness and localized experience are different claims. Physical existence, interaction or activity alone does not satisfy A1. A local perspective requires a certified qualifying organization. At the same time, the law deliberately permits genuinely certified minimal self-return processes; it does not impose a hidden complexity threshold to exclude them.
Can a one-bit memory qualify?
It can within this constitution if its actual physical realization satisfies every relevant condition: native self-return, distinguishable native futures, closure and predictive congruence, resources, boundaries and provenance. An unchanged annotation or a one-time imprint followed by erasure does not supply that certificate. The permissive certified case is a consequence of A1, while its empirical adequacy as a lower boundary remains open.
Does fluent AI language establish consciousness?
No. Fluent output is a report produced under particular physical and interaction conditions. It does not establish the required realization, internal returns, native prediction or process provenance. Artificial consciousness is possible in principle under SPC-2, but the publication certifies no current LLM session as a conscious vessel.
Is a static model or transcript the same as a running vessel?
No. Stored parameters, a text transcript, current activations and an executing system are different physical objects. A static description does not acquire the execution and native feedback of the process it describes. A physically persistent register can itself be assessed under A1, but its status does not follow simply from what its stored symbols describe.
Must the brain calculate all of its future?
No. The predictive object characterizes current physical dispositions across admitted finite native continuations. It need not be explicitly computed or represented by the vessel. It is also not an observer's posterior or a prediction horizon selected for a chart. On the certified finite domain, all-future equivalence has an exact finite evaluation procedure.
Is consciousness a single score in SPC-2?
No. A1 supplies an admission and individuation rule, and A2 retains a structured object containing native operations, record labels, probabilities and actual-class transitions. A scalar contrast can lose relations that A2 keeps. Brightness, network size, complexity and the decorative visual on this website are not consciousness measurements.
Does awareness cause quantum events or collapse?
No. The book's quantum-measurement constructions specify observer-independent events and material records under two distinct physical constitutions. Awareness does not trigger their events. Those chapters are physical antecedents and resources for vessel modeling; the central SPC-2 construction does not require every qualifying vessel to be quantum.
Does a scene-less interval mean the person disappears?
No. The organism and person can remain physically and biographically continuous while there is no current lived scene or localized experiential subject. Under A3 a genuine qualification gap ends the experiential episode and renewed qualification begins another. This is a distinction about episodes, not the disappearance of the person in every ordinary sense.
Is no experience the experience of darkness?
No. Experienced darkness, silence or blankness is still a scene. A truly scene-less interval contains no subject secretly observing its absence. Awareness as the knowing aspect of U is a separate ontological commitment, not a hidden personal episode continuing in the gap.
Does remembering nothing prove there was no experience?
No. A scene can occur without later successful recall. But failed recall also does not prove that an unremembered scene occurred. Nonresponse, amnesia, disconnected experience and genuine scene absence are different possibilities. The publication provides no validated clinical procedure for deciding every individual case.
Would copying my memories upload the same subject?
Memory copying alone does not transfer a subject under A3. A fresh qualifying receiver has its own admission; the donor's episode is assessed separately. Genuine in-place renewal can preserve an episode through a nonbranching provenance chain, even with changed material. Functional or autobiographical similarity alone does not supply that physical process relation.
Must animals have language or self-reflection to qualify?
No. A1 does not require human language, an adult autobiographical model or explicit metacognition. A comparative application must specify the animal's own physical organization and meaningful sensory/action repertoire. This openness is not a certified species list, and the publication does not derive numerical thresholds for insects or marine mammals.
What about plants and fungi?
Signaling, adaptation and regulation establish physical capacities, not experience by themselves. SPC-2 asks for the same justified R* and A1 analysis as in other systems. Its permissive minimal cases remain relevant, but a material category alone gives neither a positive nor a negative certificate. The edition discusses the contested literature without claiming a completed plant or fungal validation.
Do contemplative experiences prove the theory?
No. They motivate distinctions between awareness, contents, personal identification and reports. Their structured investigation can contribute experience-facing constraints. Neither felt certainty nor a quiet narrative establishes A0, a particular mathematical operator or the exact SPC-2 laws. The manuscript treats its contemplative sources as philosophical interlocutors.
Does nonduality imply one universal subject or personal survival?
No. U is not assigned a numerically specified cosmic perspective. A1 individuates local qualifying subjects; A3 states when their episodes end. Persistence of underlying reality does not demonstrate survival or migration of a terminated subject. The monograph establishes no theorem of personal survival.
Has SPC-2 been empirically validated?
The edition reports no completed neural-data validation or validated realization of a human, animal, plant or deployed language model. It provides a finite conditional construction, exact statements, examples and countermodels. Selecting adequate actual-vessel realizations and assessing A1 and A2 against independently constrained evidence remain outstanding.
What does candidate internal resolution mean?
It means that a certified finite realization plus the declared laws determines the nominated manifestation assignments without an extra unnamed map. “Internal” limits the claim to that specified constitution. It does not mean the source-awareness premise has been proved, every actual vessel has been certified or all theories sharing its physical predictions have been excluded.
Can it be tested if the aspect interpretation preserves physics?
Proposed realizations, descriptor sufficiency, subject boundaries and fixed A2 correspondences can face evidence. But an interpretation that leaves every physical transcript probability identical to its physical reduct cannot be distinguished from that reduct by those transcripts alone. The test must name which claim it evaluates.
Does any communication merge two subjects?
No. Communication through external ports need not enter the internal core graph. However, once a positive coupling belongs to the certified internal organization and supports the required compatible return, arbitrarily weak coupling can merge cores under the exact rule. Boundary typing must be independently justified; it cannot be chosen merely to preserve a preferred count.
Does a failed certificate prove a system is unconscious?
Not necessarily. Failure of closure, admissibility or grounding can mean the proposed representation lies outside the finite theorem. It may need more state, a corrected boundary contract or another mathematical treatment. A completed certified model that assigns no perspective is a different case from an incomplete model.
