## The experience is the enacted whole

<a id="section-1"></a>
## 1. The experiencing occurrence and its organization

**An experience is the complete qualifying interpretive activity actually occurring within its unit.** Its contents are related contributions within that activity. They do not become an experience only after another observer receives them.

Consider a familiar scent accompanied by a recollection. Familiarity qualifies the scent as it is encountered. The recollection concerns another occasion, and its remembered character distinguishes that occasion from something happening again. A list containing a scent value, a familiarity response and a memory value leaves out these relations. An account of the occurrence must explain both which contributions are present and how they belong together.

A melody presents the same demand in temporal form. A retained note, a newly received note and an anticipated continuation can participate in one unfolding encounter. They occupy different temporal roles even while their physical carriers are jointly available. Hearing the transition requires the enacted relation among those contributions. The existence of several traces does not supply that relation by itself.

This distinguishes **a contribution to an occurrence** from **the complete occurrence**. A mechanism binding a scent to familiarity can be indispensable without exhausting the encounter. Placing that mechanism inside a larger enclosure does not automatically establish another experiential whole either. The target is the actual organization of the qualifying unit, including the interpreted relations through which its contributions participate in this occasion.

Enacted scaffolding identifies the complete qualifying organization with experience, including its experienced character. It supplies no finished representation waiting for an additional observer to make it experiential. The explanatory work is to specify the organization, how contributions enter it and what makes it a whole. The [temporal-passage treatment](/consciousness/temporal-passage) develops the same position through the organization of succession.

Three principles carry the present account. Complete-enactment identity specifies what the occurrence is. Current incorporation specifies how interpreted contributions participate now. Unit unity identifies the coordinated qualifying enactment with one perspective at the declared stage and grain. A linked realization witness will then make the physical requirement explicit: the roles must belong to one actual construction, rather than occur independently somewhere within an apparatus.

The result relates physical enactment to phenomenal organization without reducing either to an output list. It distinguishes current incorporation, retained scaffolding and later recollection. Its formal statements establish the consequences of the stated constitutive premises, identify incomplete descriptions of a fixed occurrence and preserve earlier occurrence against later record loss. The scent and melody examples make those commitments concrete.

## 2. Framework: unit, enactment and constitution

<a id="section-2-1"></a>
### 2.1 The interpretive unit and its actual activity

Shadow Theory treats the unknown Ground as fundamental. **Awareness** provisionally names a quality attributed to that Ground; it does not name an already individuated cosmic subject. Localized experiencing concerns organized manifestation within reality, rather than manufacturing a new fundamental substance. The question here is how localized experience is organized.

Let $A$ be a qualifying interpretive unit, and let $J$ scope its relevant activity. For the human application, $A$ is the embodied person with the requisite organization of interpretation, integration, retention and access. This activity has physical implementation and a situation. Operative distinctions, source relationships, acquired scaffolding and relevant history belong to its specification. They are not optional background after the activity has been defined.

Write $K_A(J)$ for the **complete qualifying enactment** at that scope. It is an actual activity or process token. It is neither a formal description alone, the entire enduring person, nor a set of future events that have not been executed. Its organization includes the instantiated capacities, relevant dispositions, implementation and contextual relations required by the constitutive account. A reduced response model can predict one answer correctly while omitting organization that matters to the occurrence.

The scope is therefore fixed: an independently warranted qualifying unit, an admissible operative history and a complete relevant realization. The three principles below determine the occurrence attributed to that unit. They do not supply a universal rule for selecting units. The human application follows the independently qualifying adult construction in the [block-universe article](/consciousness/block-universe); operative formative history remains an input to that application.

This scope matters when reading related papers together. The [temporal-passage paper](/consciousness/temporal-passage) states a particular experiential-contributor history condition. The block-universe treatment examines the universal version's well-founded-ancestry problem. The present account begins with its unit and admissible history independently warranted; it does not resolve that universal admission question by assuming every relevant physical contributor already experiences.

<a id="section-2-2"></a>
### 2.2 Three constitutive principles

<a id="principle-2-1"></a>
**Constitutive principle 2.1: complete-enactment identity.** For a qualifying interpretive unit $A$ at scope $J$, the complete relevant organization actually enacted as $K_A(J)$ is the experiencing occurrence, including its experiential character. No additional experiential product or observer converts that complete enactment into experience.

<a id="principle-2-2"></a>
**Constitutive principle 2.2: current incorporation.** Within that enactment, the interpreted contributions and relations actually taken up in the unit's current construction constitute its current experiential organization. Retention, availability or causal influence alone does not establish current incorporation.

<a id="principle-2-3"></a>
**Constitutive principle 2.3: unit unity.** At a fixed stage and grain, the coordinated qualifying enactment of $A$ sustains one perspective. Distinguishable contributions, modalities and descriptions within that enactment do not independently multiply the perspective.

These principles have different jobs. Identity concerns the occurrence itself. Incorporation concerns the roles of its current contents. Unity concerns the organization of those contents as one perspective. The identity and unit rule are stated in the enacted-scaffolding manuscript, Sections 7.4–7.7; actual uptake specifies the incorporation relation in the temporal-passage paper, Section 2.2. Keeping their functions distinct prevents a content, its physical support and the whole occurrence from becoming interchangeable descriptions.

Unit unity applies to actual organization. A boundary drawn around unrelated processes does not supply it. A shared power supply, controller or enclosure does not establish conjoint interpretation. Phenomenal unity also differs from joint accessibility: contributions being available to one reporting operation does not establish the relations by which they are experienced together. Bayne and Chalmers' discussion of unity motivates this distinction; its reference is retained in the final chapter.

Interpretation can be automatic, immediate and nonverbal. Incorporation does not require naming the occurrence, deliberately reflecting on it or placing it in an explicit self-story. Reflective recognition and psychological appropriation can become additional organizations of experience. Neither is a separate observer required by complete-enactment identity.

## What enters experience, and how the roles connect

<a id="section-3"></a>
## 3. Current incorporation and operative scaffolding

**Being stored, being available and being taken up now are different relations.** A retained disposition can shape an interpretation without being recalled. A representation can be accessible without being read. A contribution can enter experience without being endorsed as a reason for action.

Five functional roles specify the activity:

- $D$: actual reception or internal retrieval.
- $I$: interpretation through operative distinctions.
- $C$: consolidation of relevant relations.
- $M$: retention sufficient for their use.
- $U$: actual interpretive uptake.

These are roles, not a demand for five separate modules or an invariant serial pipeline. One implemented operation can perform several roles. Distributed operations can jointly perform a role. Here $U$ denotes uptake; the unsplit discussed elsewhere in the framework is a different use of the symbol.

Uptake occurs when what has become available participates as an interpreted contribution in ongoing recognition, relating, appraisal, orientation or response organization. A residue that alters a threshold does not establish that relation merely by causing a change. An image or bodily response can nevertheless enter current interpretation without the person recognizing the unconscious association that produced it. The interpreted response and its inaccessible formative cause have different roles.

The distinction has three parts. First, a disposition can be operative without appearing as a recollection. Second, accessibility can remain unused. Third, actual interpretive use does not require deliberate endorsement or practical authority. Hearing a sound need not mean accepting it as a reason to act.

The [constituted-agency mechanism](/consciousness/constituted-agency), especially its acquisition, assessment and installation analysis, makes related distinctions inspectable. A retained self-mechanism model can remain unread. It can be assessed while its installation route is blocked. Downstream compensation can reproduce successful performance while the original recommendation retains its authority. A direct neutral write can even match raw success without acquisition of the model. Successful output therefore cannot substitute for the actual organization of acquisition, interpretation and use. Practical authority is an agency question; current interpreted incorporation is broader.

Let $R_{\mathrm{later}}$ denote the capacity for later addressed retrieval. It differs from $U$. A construction can be taken up now and subsequently become irretrievable. An unused retrieval route supplies no uptake now. Operative retention $M$ need only keep the contribution available sufficiently for its actual use. A later recollection is another current construction concerning the earlier occasion, rather than an acknowledgment needed to complete that earlier occasion.

The complete organization $K_A$ exceeds the inventory of foreground contents. A learned disposition, an implementation condition and a currently recalled image need not have the same constitutive role. **What realizes and organizes the occurrence differs from what is currently incorporated as interpreted content.** Memory and acquired scaffolding can matter without every retained item being presently remembered.

<a id="section-4"></a>
## 4. Linked realization of one construction

A capacity list does not specify a construction. Imagine an enclosure containing a sensor, a word interpreter, an unrelated binding process, an archive and a controller using another input. Each role occurs somewhere. Yet no single construction has thereby been received, interpreted, consolidated, retained and taken up.

The weak condition is merely a separate witness for every role:

<a id="equation-1"></a>
$$
\bigwedge_{r\in\{D,I,C,M,U\}}\exists k_r\,W_r(A,k_r). \tag{1}
$$

Even writing the same identifier $k$ on all five components adds no actual relation between their operations. The requirement is one compatible realization of the relevant construction.

<a id="definition-4-1"></a>
### Definition 4.1: linked realization witness

Let $\mathcal R_k$ be a typed role structure for construction $k$. Its nodes specify the required role instances. Its relations specify operative source and occasion binding, retained-carrier availability, and actual recruitment or producer-to-consumer routes.

Let $\mathcal P_{A,J}$ be the unit's actual process structure over activity $J$. It includes event tokens, operation ports, retained carriers, causal order and relevant boundary conditions. A linked realization witness is a map

<a id="equation-2"></a>
$$
w:\mathcal R_k\longrightarrow\mathcal P_{A,J} \tag{2}
$$

that preserves the required types and actual relations under the declared realization contract.

The map need not be injective. Roles can overlap, and implementation can be distributed. A template for a temporally extended construction can place several roles in one physical operation while specifying the internal relations that operation realizes. If an event needs another event's output, the actual route and physical ordering must support use of that output. A retained contribution needs an operative carrier, rather than an analyst's reconstruction of what once happened.

Source and occasion binding make this stronger than transporting values. The same value can participate as a live estimate, a memory or an anticipation. A faithful witness preserves the relation actually asserted by the construction. An externally imposed probe also differs from the endogenous operation that uses a contribution. Semantic calibration belongs to the application; the witness records the implemented relations to which that calibration applies.

<a id="lemma-4-2"></a>
### Lemma 4.2: linked realization and separate capacities

A linked realization witness supplies instances of its required roles. Finding each role somewhere in an apparatus does not generally supply such a witness, even when those instances carry matching written identifiers.

**Proof.** A type- and relation-preserving map supplies the images of every required node and relation. For the converse, take isolated events with the five role types and no operative edges between them. Every separate role predicate holds, but a template requiring a cross-role use relation has no witness. Matching identifiers do not create the missing physical relations.

This is the difference between an actual construction and a collection of ingredients. The witness's physical content is the set of actual relations that realization must preserve. Its experiential significance follows from the constitutive principles in the previous chapter. Two constructions can each possess a linked witness without belonging to a conjoint construction of the whole unit. A unit-wide account must therefore specify the wider organization and the actual relations among incorporated constructions. Common enclosure cannot replace that work.

## The whole field, enacted in scent and melody

<a id="section-5"></a>
## 5. Whole-field constitution

**The whole is relational as well as inclusive.** Preserving several contribution values does not necessarily preserve which one qualifies another, what occasion a recollection concerns or which signal is anticipated. Those relations belong to the current interpreted construction.

Fix a current stage $t$ at the chosen activity scope. Let $\mathcal W_A(t)$ collect the incorporated construction witnesses of $A$, together with their bindings. Shared-source relations, temporal modes, affective qualifications and actual recruitment remain in this structure. It is not an unordered bag of witnesses.

Let $K_A(t)$ denote the complete actual enactment at this scope. Its current interpreted organization is

<a id="equation-3"></a>
$$
\operatorname{Cur}_A(t)=\pi_{\mathrm{cur}}\bigl(K_A(t),\mathcal W_A(t)\bigr). \tag{3}
$$

Here $\pi_{\mathrm{cur}}$ names the constitutive correspondence for current incorporation. Applying it requires the actual witnesses and their interpreted roles. It is not a task-output summary. This notation separates current content from the complete organization realizing and organizing it.

Completeness is relative to a unit and target. An account is constitutively complete when it preserves all organization relevant to that occurrence under the adopted law. Establishing that a physical inventory meets this condition requires evidence. A short representation can preserve the relevant relations faithfully; a long description can omit one that matters. The decisive issue is omission of a constituent or relation required by the target, not descriptive length.

<a id="proposition-5-1"></a>
### Proposition 5.1: within-unit constitutive closure

Fix stage, activity scope and grain. Assume all three conditions:

1. $A$ is an independently warranted qualifying interpretive unit with an admissible operative history.
2. $K_A$ specifies its complete relevant actual enactment, including linked constructions, bindings and constitutive realization, rather than only a task projection.
3. Complete-enactment identity, current incorporation and unit unity apply to this organization.

Then the experiencing occurrence attributed to $A$ is $K_A$ itself. Its current experiential organization is given by actual incorporation in Equation (3). An account omitting an actual constituent or relation required by that occurrence does not exhaust it. No further experiential product or separate observer is required after the complete qualifying enactment.

**Proof.** The first two assumptions fix both the unit and its complete target organization. Complete-enactment identity identifies this actual organization with the occurrence; it does not identify a causal predecessor awaiting another experiential output. Current incorporation specifies the interpreted contributions and relations participating in the present organization. Unit unity makes their coordinated enactment one perspective at the fixed scope. An account omitting a required constituent or relation cannot exhaust that same target. A further conversion or observer is not an operation left unsupplied by these premises: requiring one would add a condition to the adopted constitutive identity.

The conclusion follows from the three principles together. The unit and realization premises specify physical organization; the principles assign that organization's experiential significance. The account completes the within-unit whole without placing another object or recipient beyond the enactment. A causal contribution has not been substituted for the complete occurrence: the target includes the unit's other actually incorporated relations.

This distinction also explains why merely adding items cannot establish a field. The whole possesses its organization through the relations of the incorporated constructions. It is not an unstructured total laid over otherwise independent ingredients.

<a id="section-6"></a>
## 6. Scent, recollection and melody

<a id="section-6-1"></a>
### 6.1 A currently qualified encounter

Take a present scent that is affectively qualified and accompanied by a recollection experienced as remembered. This is a philosophical construction for separating the relevant roles. The scent's physical cause, the acquired disposition producing familiarity, the represented past occasion and the current recollection are distinct contributions to its description.

When the recollection is actually taken up, the current organization contains more than a scent value beside a memory value. It includes the relation through which the latter appears as remembered in the present occasion. Familiarity can qualify the scent without presenting the entire history that formed the disposition. A bodily or affective response can participate without its formative association being explicitly identified.

Suppose a local mechanism $O$ realizes familiarity. If the unit also incorporates the recollection and its qualification of the encounter, $O$ does not exhaust the occurrence merely because familiarity is indispensable. The additional constituent and its actual relations within $A$ matter. Finding another stored record elsewhere would not establish the same addition. Familiarity by itself likewise supplies no reason to insert a recollection that is not occurring.

The distinctions lie in enacted organization. Changing a remembered contribution into a live perception changes its occasion role even if selected ingredient values remain fixed. Changing source attribution can alter what the contribution means in the encounter. The linked realization witness must track those relations. A value-only summary cannot determine them.

<a id="section-6-2"></a>
### 6.2 Temporal differentiation within one activity

A melody makes the temporal case explicit. A listener receives a note, retains its operative contribution, and interprets a subsequent note as following it while anticipating a continuation. Retained predecessor, live estimate and anticipation are jointly available in the current construction, but they have different modes. The [temporal-passage article](/consciousness/temporal-passage) develops the reception and integration schedule in full.

The organization can be represented schematically as

<a id="equation-4"></a>
$$
\bigl(c_{\mathrm{ret}},e_{\mathrm{live}},g_{\mathrm{ant}};\ c\prec_{\mathrm{rep}}e,
\text{ common stream},\text{ actual uptake}\bigr). \tag{4}
$$

The semicolon separates contribution values and modes from interpreted relations. It does not demand pitch names or an explicit proposition about before and after. Implicit recognition and relating can enact the transition.

An order-insensitive code cannot distinguish a sequence from its reversal under a fixed readout. Yet even an ordered archive can remain dormant. A retained note can be attributed to another stream. Sequential contributions can be interpreted as fusion rather than the nominated succession. Retained order information therefore needs source binding, temporal differentiation and actual use to realize this construction.

Under complete-enactment identity, receiving, retaining, relating and taking up the contributions constitute the experienced transition within the qualifying listener. The activity need not wait for the melody to finish and deliver a completed display to another observer. Anticipation does not require an actual signal from the future: it is a current disposition or interpreted contribution concerning a possible continuation. Delivery routes, retention and timing remain physical requirements, developed in the [block-universe source-to-use construction](/consciousness/block-universe).

Scent and melody show how a field can be qualitatively and temporally differentiated without fragmenting into unrelated ingredients. What is experienced together includes the different roles in which contributions are taken up. It does not assert simultaneous occurrence of their sources.

## One occurrence, its history and its predictive organization

<a id="section-7"></a>
## 7. Constitutive extent and numerical occurrence identity

**The whole occurrence is an actual token, not merely a matching pattern.** Two descriptions of one token do not create a second occurrence. Two separately enacted tokens can match in organization and contents without becoming numerically identical.

The realization must first separate current constituents from support and formative influence. A past encounter can form a disposition without remaining a current implementing event. A remote process can support an operation or participate directly in its constitution, depending on its actual realized relations. Indispensability alone decides neither present content nor physical membership. The complete realization identifies the relations and implementation required by the account; it does not collect every cause in the unit's ancestry.

Containment is another relation. Suppose $O$ has dynamics $T_u^O$, while a containing apparatus $H$ adds a record state $z$:

<a id="equation-5"></a>
$$
T_u^H(o,z)=\bigl(T_u^O(o),G_u(o,z)\bigr). \tag{5}
$$

Projection onto $o$ preserves the original trajectory. The added record can concern the enactment without entering a conjoint interpretation at the containing scale. An extra enclosure or recording channel therefore does not establish another experiencing unit. Conversely, restricting a description to $O$ is incomplete for the nominated $A$ occurrence when it omits an actual constituent or constitutive relation of $K_A$. The judgment concerns actual organization, not how many boxes a diagram contains.

On the adopted identity, $e_A=K_A$ denotes the same actual occurrence. It does not merely assert an isomorphism between types. Counting occurrences requires actual token identity. A common label, formal structure or report cannot supply it.

The perspective is identified with its qualifying enactment rather than assigned to another owner behind it. This belongs to the constitution; an ordinary rule for counting events does not independently derive owner identity. Within a fixed unit, actual incorporation and completeness distinguish an aspect from the whole. A claim about another unit needs its own qualification and realization. Containment settles neither that admission nor a universal claim of exclusivity.

<a id="section-8"></a>
## 8. Common-prefix invariance and later loss

An occurrence can extend through time while depending on organization enacted by its current stage. Reception, retention and uptake occupy physical events. They need not be compressed into a universal simultaneous slice.

Let $\Gamma_A(t)$ denote the complete relevant enacted prefix for the scoped assignment. It includes the unit, operative history, relevant realization and constitutive boundary facts. Fixed constitutive maps evaluate qualification and experiential organization on that complete argument.

<a id="proposition-8-1"></a>
### Proposition 8.1: common-prefix invariance

If two histories agree on $\Gamma_A(t)$ under the same constitutive maps, their assignment for the occurrence at $t$ is the same. Later loss of its record or later addressed retrieval cannot alter that earlier assignment.

**Proof.** The maps receive equal complete arguments and therefore yield equal values. Later events can alter later arguments, including subsequent access to the occurrence. They do not change the assignment to the earlier common prefix.

The agreement must include operative organization, not just matching answers or a neural snapshot. Where full A2 is jointly invoked, the native continuation contract, relevant dispositions and actual predictive point are included. They are features of the organization at the stage. They do not require future actual events already to have been received or a later acknowledgment to complete the earlier experience.

This locates later recollection correctly. Losing a trace after uptake changes what can later be retrieved. It does not remove that earlier uptake or its occurrence. When a construction is first taken up during a later reconstruction, that experience concerns an earlier event; it does not supply experience retrospectively. Optional $R_{\mathrm{later}}$ keeps the occurrence distinct from later evidence about it or access to it.

Current unity and temporal continuation also differ. A melody can change its content during a continuing activity. A record can survive an interruption. Neither fact alone determines identity across every temporal segment. The invariance result concerns a fixed earlier occurrence under continuations preserving its complete constitutive prefix.

<a id="section-9"></a>
## 9. Complete organization and the predictive framework

SPC-2 distinguishes perspective admission through A1, complete phenomenal organization through A2, and nonbranching continuation through A3 on a specified physical realization. The enacted-scaffolding formulation has not been proved equivalent to these laws. Its present within-unit constitution follows from the explicit identity, incorporation and unity principles. A joint application therefore requires an independently justified correspondence between the qualifying unit, its realizing organization and the SPC-2 assignment.

Full A2 identifies complete phenomenal organization with the complete endogenous predictive object, pointed by the realized predictive class. Native operation and record labels, every admitted finite continuation and the successor structure belong to that object. A current task state, passive trace or final answer cannot replace it. Consequently $\operatorname{Cur}_A$ in Equation (3) is a current-incorporation projection, rather than a replacement for complete organization.

That commitment yields a definite compatibility condition. Fix an exact intrinsic carrier $X$ and its native contract. Let $q_\infty:X\to Z_\infty$ be the complete native predictive quotient. Any fixed phenomenal property assigned jointly through A2 and the enacted correspondence must be constant on $q_\infty$ fibres. The final chapter states the full factorization criterion and its proof.

Equal current foregrounds can coexist with differences in complete organization. A dormant disposition need not be explicitly recalled in order to remain part of the relevant native structure. Stored organization and currently incorporated content are distinct without being disconnected.

An inventory of present items therefore leaves out roles, modes, realization and token identity. The content-summary results in Appendix A determine precisely what finite existential inventories preserve and provide a same-occurrence completeness certificate. Those results identify information supplied by a partial description. The enacted account instead supplies the actual unit enactment and its interpreted relations; it does not manufacture a whole from an inventory alone.

The published A0–A3 constitution and the [dated A0 clarification](/consciousness#a0-clarification) retain their own stated status. The within-unit account does not silently replace those laws or resolve subject selection, grain or general continuity by reusing a current-content projection.

## What enacted constitution explains

<a id="section-10"></a>
## 10. The explanatory force of enacted constitution

**The account begins with actual organization.** Reception, operative retention, interpretation and uptake specify how contributions are present and usable in an encounter. Complete-enactment identity identifies this organized activity with the occurrence, including its character. A completed image awaiting a recipient is not the explanatory starting point.

The identity makes substantive organizational commitments. An unread archive differs from actual uptake. A live estimate differs from a recollection. A copied source label without a realizing route differs from implemented occasion binding. Changing one of these relations can alter the proposed current organization while leaving selected ingredient values or output accuracy unchanged. The linked realization witness specifies the difference an application must implement.

Retained scaffolding and current content remain connected through actual operations. Dispositions constrain interpretation. Some produce a presently incorporated image, expectation or affective qualification. Others influence the construction without appearing as separately presented items. The current field is the organization of what is taken up; the complete enactment includes the realization and relevant powers through which that organization exists.

The philosophical argument is an identity argument within an explicit constitution. Its warrant is the placement of experiential presence in the actual activity that interprets contributions, rather than the addition of an unspecified experiential object after that activity is complete. Its mathematics articulates consequences and realization requirements of this identification. It distinguishes a within-unit whole from unrelated capacities, a partial description and a surrounding container. A processing score does not prove the identity.

The contributor question remains meaningful. To ask whether a process is only a contributor is to compare its actual relations with the complete target organization. If a scent binder omits the recollection currently qualifying the encounter, its description omits part of that occurrence. If a reconstruction preserves those relations in fewer descriptive variables, it need not omit them. **Completeness concerns constitutive coverage, not the size of the diagram.**

At the declared scope, the answer is determinate. The experiencing occurrence of the qualifying unit is the complete actual organization. Its current field consists in the interpreted incorporation enacted there. No additional witness is required to convert that otherwise complete organization into the occurrence it already constitutes.

This gives the consciousness programme a concrete within-unit account. It specifies how source roles, memory, temporal differentiation, affective qualification and actual uptake belong to an occurrence. The unit's independent qualification and its complete realization remain premises. Their presence keeps the conclusion anchored to the target it actually explains.

<a id="section-11"></a>
## 11. The whole is its organized enactment

Whole-field constitution requires more than interacting contributions: it requires an account of their participation in one actual occurrence. Enacted scaffolding supplies that account through complete-enactment identity, current incorporation and unit unity. The linked realization witness specifies one actual construction while allowing distributed implementation and overlapping roles. Within the qualifying unit, the complete enactment is the occurrence itself.

Scent and melody show why values, source roles and temporal modes must be preserved together. The memory of another occasion can qualify the present encounter without being a live perception of that occasion. Retained and incoming notes can form an experienced transition without representing their source events as simultaneous. A present anticipation concerns a possible continuation without receiving that future event.

Retained scaffolding can shape the field without every memory becoming current content. Later retrieval can concern an occurrence without completing it retrospectively. Common-prefix invariance preserves the earlier occurrence against later record loss, while the predictive compatibility requirement keeps a current projection distinct from complete organization.

The resulting explanation is unified: **a qualifying unit's experience is its actually enacted interpretive organization, including its current contributions and relations.** A further product for a separate observer performs no required constitutive step. The explicit premises and complete-realization requirement state exactly where this answer applies.

The connected treatments develop the same distinctions in different applications. [Experienced temporal passage](/consciousness/temporal-passage) follows retained, live and anticipated contributions into succession. [Constituted agency](/consciousness/constituted-agency) separates retained self-information from its practical authority. [Block universe and Shadow Theory](/consciousness/block-universe) supplies source delivery, retention and operative-use constraints within a physical history. [Reflective alignment](/consciousness/ai-alignment) asks how constructed interpretations can remain available without acquiring unconditional authority. Each application keeps its own hypotheses and evidential obligations.

## Exact completeness and predictive-identity results

<a id="appendix-a"></a>
## Appendix A. Content summaries and same-occurrence completeness

An inventory can preserve some content relations while losing which occurrence supplied them. The finite result makes that loss exact.

Let $V$ be a finite comparison universe of nominated phenomenal constituent tokens. Let $C(e)\subseteq V$ be the nonempty nominated contents of occurrence $e$. This representation abstracts from the organization and modes in which those constituents occur. Define the unindexed existential summary by

<a id="equation-6"></a>
$$
\mathcal J(K)\ \Longleftrightarrow\ \exists e\;K\subseteq C(e),
\qquad \varnothing\ne K\subseteq V. \tag{6}
$$

For $\mathcal F=\{C(e)\}$, its true queries form the downward closure $\mathcal J=\downarrow\mathcal F$ on nonempty subsets. A true query tells us that some occurrence contains all the queried constituents. It does not name the occurrence or give its multiplicity.

<a id="proposition-a-1"></a>
### Proposition A.1: finite inverse family

If $V$ is finite, the content-set families inducing exactly $\mathcal J$ are precisely the families $\mathcal G$ satisfying

<a id="equation-7"></a>
$$
\operatorname{Max}(\mathcal J)\subseteq\mathcal G\subseteq\mathcal J. \tag{7}
$$

Their number is

$$
2^{|\mathcal J|-|\operatorname{Max}(\mathcal J)|}.
$$

**Proof.** Every member of $\mathcal G$ witnesses itself, so it belongs to $\mathcal J$. Each maximal $A\in\mathcal J$ must lie inside some $B\in\mathcal G$. Maximality forces $B=A$, so every maximal member must be included. Conversely, including every maximal member recovers all of $\mathcal J$, because each member of a finite family lies below a maximal member. Restricting included sets to members of $\mathcal J$ introduces nothing outside it. Each nonmaximal member can independently be included or omitted, giving the displayed number.

For maximal witnessed contents $\{a,b,c\}$ and $\{c,d\}$, there are nine nonempty true queries and two maximal members. There are therefore $2^{9-2}=128$ compatible content-set families. Overlap at $c$ provides no witness for $\{a,b,c,d\}$. The summary also discards multiplicity when distinct occurrences have the same nominated content set. Organized realization of a field therefore supplies information that this existential summary omits.

For a fixed independently identified occurrence, define $\mathcal J_e(K)$ by $K\subseteq C(e)$. Indexing the occurrence permits a stronger, exact relative certificate.

<a id="proposition-a-2"></a>
### Proposition A.2: same-occurrence extent

If $\mathcal J_e(B)$ holds and $\neg\mathcal J_e(B\cup\{x\})$ holds for every $x\in V\setminus B$, then $C(e)=B$ relative to $V$.

**Proof.** The positive premise gives $B\subseteq C(e)$. Any $x\in C(e)\setminus B$ would make $B\cup\{x\}\subseteq C(e)$, contradicting its negative premise. No constituent of $C(e)$ lies outside $B$, so the sets are equal within the comparison universe.

The negative premises require actual warrant. Failure to report a constituent is not their logical equivalent. The certificate concerns the contents of an already fixed occurrence. The enacted account supplies law-relative constitution through the complete unit realization and current incorporation. Neither method replaces relational organization with an unstructured item list.

<a id="appendix-b"></a>
## Appendix B. Compatibility with complete predictive identity

Fix an exact intrinsic carrier $X$ and its full native contract. Let

$$
q_\infty:X\longrightarrow Z_\infty
$$

be its all-finite-futures predictive quotient, carrying the required labelled operations, records and successor structure.

<a id="proposition-b-1"></a>
### Proposition B.1: full-A2 compatibility

If full A2 applies to two nominations of the same complete phenomenal organization with the same actual phenomenal point, their complete labelled pointed predictive objects are isomorphic.

If $f:X\to Y$ is asserted to be a fixed phenomenal property under A2 and the enacted correspondence, $f$ must be constant on $q_\infty$ fibres. Equivalently, a function $\bar f$ exists on the attained predictive classes such that

$$
f=\bar f\circ q_\infty.
$$

**Proof.** Compose one structural identification with the common phenomenal organization and the inverse of the other. The composition is the required pointed labelled isomorphism. Equal predictive classes receive the same assigned pointed phenomenal organization. Every fixed property of that organization therefore agrees on each fibre. Conversely, fibre constancy makes the definition

$$
\bar f\bigl(q_\infty(x)\bigr)=f(x)
$$

well-defined on the attained classes, yielding the factorization.

The last statement is a general factorization criterion. Suppose a payload is $v:W\to V$ and the target is $F:W\to P$. Showing that a contextual relation $R$ fails to factor through $v$ does not show that $F$ also fails to factor through it. On binary pairs, take

$$
R(a,b)=(a,b),\qquad v(a,b)=a,\qquad F(a,b)=a.
$$

The payload omits context $b$ while preserving every $F$ distinction. The relevant obstruction is an equal-$v$, different-$F$ pair. In an A2 application, the compatibility demand applies to properties actually asserted to be phenomenal under the correspondence. Naming an arbitrary operational flag a phenomenal predicate supplies no such assertion's warrant.
